IRVINE, Calif. — Hundreds of people sharing one of Japan’s most common surnames will gather in Irvine next weekend for the first-ever “Tanaka Day.”

Tanaka Farms will host the event Sept. 19–20, with approximately 400 people from across the country already RSVP’d, according to LAist. Farm owner Glenn Tanaka created the event as a way to bring together people who share the Tanaka name while exchanging family stories and exploring the history of Japanese immigration to the United States. The setting is particularly fitting: Tanaka roughly translates to “middle of the rice field.” Glenn Tanaka’s own family has farmed in California for four generations, beginning with his grandfather, Takeo Tanaka.

The gathering will also highlight how Japanese-American farming families were affected by incarceration during World War II.
