IRVINE, Calif. — An hours-long SWAT standoff at a Westpark home ended Friday after police used tear gas to force an armed suspect from the residence.

Police responded shortly before 8 a.m. to a home near Plaza Vista Elementary following a 911 call reporting threats during a family disturbance. Two family members escaped the home, while a 32-year-old man remained barricaded inside with a firearm.

After attempts to contact the man were unsuccessful, Irvine Police deployed its SWAT and drone teams. Officers eventually used a distraction device and tear gas, and the suspect surrendered around 12:20 p.m. Police recovered a firearm from the home. The suspect was booked on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon and making criminal threats.
