Irvine swimmers gearing up toward league finals
Courtside takes on Deerfield
The Courtside Stingrays posted many solid swims in their meet against Deerfield on Saturday.
Leading the Stingrays were Michael Abshier, Claire Chow, Nicholas Huynh and Jenna Morley, who each won all of their races.
The 7-8 age group medley relay team of Keegan McCarthy, Ethan Han, Cai Le and Kenzie Sellers finished in first place. Also winning their relays were the 9-10 mixed relay team of Jaesang An, Claire Chow, Michael Abshier and Tony Foo, the 13-14 team of Nicholas Huynh, Jenna Morley, Parker Mallough and Kelvin Akinyemi and the 13-14 freestyle relay team of Austin Kenyon, Ashlyn Shahin, Alex Ibasitas and Andrew Wraith.
Keegan McCarthy led the 7-8 age group, winning two of his events and qualifying for league championships. Cai Le won two of her races and Kenzie Sellers qualified in all of her events.
For the 9-10 age group, Jazzy Chabria improved her 100 individual medley time by 28 seconds.
The Deerfield Bluefins’ mixed medley relay teams placed first in 11-12 and 15-18 age groups, while their medley relay teams finished second in the 7-8, 9-10 and 13-14 age groups.
Deerfield freestyle relay teams almost had a clean sweep, taking first place in all but one age group.
Allyson Kusuma and Ethan Diedricks finished first in all of their individual events in the 11-12 age group. Johanna Godfrey, Paris Major, Shayan Shaikh and Mateo Wilkens-Huff finished first in two of their individual events.
Arista Kusuma broke a 19-year-old Bluefins team record in the girls 5-6 age group 25-yard freestyle.
Greentree swims with College Park
The Greentree Gators finished off a 5-0 regular dual season last Saturday.
The 5-6 group saw Drew Bautista, Isaiah Bahadoor and Kylee West earning first place in events.
In the 7-8 group, Emma Beliveau and Sam Bowman earned first places.
The 9-10 age group started strong by winning the medley relay. Finishing first in events were Luke Witting, Natalie Bautista and Tate Fitzgerald.
In the 11-12 age group, Brad France earned two firsts and Mandy Lagerlof also won an event. Swimmers with top-three finishes included Noah Bahadoor, Kimberly Lai, Rebecca Rookard and Katherine Vo.
The 13-14 age group won its medley and freestyle relays.
Earning firsts were Juliana Witting, Anthony Fitzgerald and Jessica Thompson. Those with top three finishes included Alex King, Jack Marlin, Jake Clanton, Elizabeth Radmilovich, Bryce Tanikawa and Kayla Yamamoto.
The 15-18 age group Gators dominated their relays. First places were earned by Riki Yamamoto, Mo Bourdi and Zach Bird.
The College Park Splash hosted the Greentree Gators for their final meet of the regular season on Saturday. The Splash won three of the mixed medley relays.
Taking home blue ribbons were the 5-6 team of Sasha Clarke, Taylor Thongintra, Brooke Knisely and Addison Nelson, the 7-8 team of Ethan Knisely, Siya Chava, Dylan McCahill and Madi Lam, and the 11-12 team of Parker Macy, Alex Palakian, Sloane McCahill and Will Nomura.
The 11-12 relay team also broke its own team recordson.
The mixed freestyle relay teams had the 9-10 group of Addison Boomsma, Ryomo Goto, Ethan MacVicar and Brenden Cook and the 11-12 team of JC Allen, Joshua Schwarzbart, Alex Palakian, and Christian Miller finished in first.
In individual races, College Park had 28 first-place, 21 second-place, and 27 third-place finishes. Swimmers earning first place in each of their events were Kelsie Kan, Brooke Knisely, Parker Macy, Dylan McCahill, Sloane McCahill and Deven Wilson.
Parker Macy broke two team records on the day. He set a mark in the 11-12 age group 50 butterfly with a time of 28.16 and broke a record in the 100 individual medley in 1:04.28.
Heritage Park swims at Colony
Heritage Park’s Adam Harper finished second in the 9-10 age group boys 100 individual medley in 1:28.94, Bhuvan Vellamena took second in the 5-6 age group boys butterfly in 40.00 and Rachel How was third in the 9-10 girls 50 breaststroke in 55.37.
Isabel Villarreal took third in the 9-10 age group girls butterfly in 59.41, Brendan Birozy was third in the 9-10 age group boys 50 breaststroke in 48.07, Ryan Hayes was second in the 7-8 girls 25 butterfly in 27.22, Adhit Nadha placed second in the 5-6 age group boys 25 backstroke in 30.28 and Cindy Ding placed second in her event.
Heritage Park Seals Relay teams shined.
The 7-8 age group mixed 100 freestyle team of Emily Kamfar, Joseph Harper, Ryan Hayes and Andrew Hwang placed first.
The 9-10 mixed 200 freestyle relay team of Matthew Yu, Shuban Vellamena, Cindy Ding and Ethan Ongkeko finished first.
The 15-18 age group mixed freestyle relay team of Lauren Thomason, Justin Ho, Camryn Kardos and Kyle Pendleton won its race.
The Colony Red Hots finished with 64 championship qualifying times and 50 first-place finishes. Swimmers who qualified in all their events included Josh Baxter, Cassandra Chow, Cullen Chow, Allison Doty, Preston Fox, Jonah Hobs and Aki Miyake.
The 5-6 age group girls swept two events.
Cara Chow, Hannah Lloyd, Maddy O’Connor, Shania Jain, Emerson Hendershott and Ellya Khalili placed first through sixth in the 25 butterfly.
Cara Chow, Maddy O’Connor, Elise Poissonier, Shania Jain, Mia Wong and Hannah Lloyd swept the freestyle.
Niko Pelissie dropped 31.25 seconds in the age 8-9 boys 50 breaststroke.
Swimmers with a time improvement in every individual event were Declan Carter, Ian Chow, and Spencer Collins-Williams.
North Irvine goes up against Westpark
Fifty-three North Irvine Knights swimmers posted time improvements, for a total of 89 new best times in all. Swimmers with time improvements in three individual events were Jasmine Cabrera, Andrew Cherry, Ryan Chu, Francesca Dameron, brothers Raymond and Timothy Llata, Bryce Park and Hannah Swailes.
Dameron not only improved her times across the board, but she also achieved a qualifying time in the 50 backstroke event.
The Knights added four more swimmers to the list for the championships meet, bringing the team total to 56 swimmers.
Michelle Mukogawa and Jonathan Peng both bested their own records in the 50-yard breaststroke (36.26) and 50 backstroke (29.72), respectively.
The meet started with five out of the Knights’ six mixed medley relay teams finishing first, including exciting final legs for the 5-6 age group team of Brandon Bertino, Alyssa Shioya, Duhita Sharma and Reese Salazar and the 9-10 age group team of Kim Huynh, Raymond Llata, Nick Grulke and Alec Ortiz.
In the individual swims, Andrew Choi, Danny Kim, and Nick Grulke each earned first-place finishes in all events.
Brandon Bertino, Mohamed Elshazly and Anastasia Gogosha earned first-place finishes in two of their three individual events.
The Westpark Marlins brought home 35 first-place ribbons and had 121 time improvements.
Kendrick Pham, Amy Shandel, Daniela Walach, and Allyson Whyte shattered the mixed 200 medley relay record with a 2:10:50 time.
Northwood Pointe swimmers improve
Northwood Pointe Flash swimmers took first place in six of the 10 relay events and 32 of 54 individual events, and broke six team records.
For team relays, Amanda Hsieh, Joshua Potter, Sean Doan, and Kathleen Overbaugh set the team record and won the mixed 13-14 age group 200-yard freestyle.
Two other age groups also took first place, including the 9-10 age group team of Andy Zhu, Mallory Venezia, Kaylie Chao and Ryan Kesler and the 11-12 age group squad of Joseph Inouye, Emma Foley, Evan Cheng and Marley King.
Three teams also won the mixed 200-yard medley, including the 9-10 age group team of Kaitlyn Kong, Christopher Leung, Taylor Inouye and Hannah Compton, 11-12 age group team of Oliver Allen, Sarah Buting, Emily Odom and Jeremy Mah, and the 15-18 age group squad of J.J. Hopper, Alexander Webster, Malcolm Overbaugh and Michael Harper.
Christopher Leung broke his own record in the boys 9-10 age group 100-yard individual medley, as well as taking first place in all of his events.
Amanda Hsieh set record for the girls 13-14 age group 50-yard freestyle and 50 breaststroke, as well as placing first in all of her events.
Cameron Hsieh broke his own record in the boys 15-18 age group 50 backstroke and placed first in two of his events.
Other swimmers who placed first in all of their individual events were Katya Tolkachev, Justin Pyne and Taylor Inouye.
Oak Creek and Woodbridge duel
Jenna Wu set a new team record for the Oak Creek Orcas in the 15-18 age group girls 50 backstroke with a time of 30.91.
Many Orcas finished the dual meet season strong with significant time improvements.
Aryan Dahiya, 9, posted the best time improvements of the day, cutting 15 seconds off his 50 breaststroke time and 14 seconds off his 50 freestyle time.
Santiago Diaz (age 5) posted a remarkable 15-second improvement in 25 freestyle and 11-second improvement in 25 backstroke.
Woodbridge broke one team record, earned 52 first-place finishes and had 95 time improvements.
Breaking a team record for the Woodbridge Waveriders was Molly McCance in the 15-18 girls 50-yard butterfly with a time of 27.76.
Woodbridge swimmers earning first place in all three of their individual events were Ian Du, Rin Hoshina, Sean McCance, Maya Nishizaka, Aahana Soni, Max Stewart, and Natalie Westfall.
Park Paseo takes on Northpark
The Park Paseo Northstars broke three records.
Hannah Palmer swam a 1:06.50 in the girls 13-14 age group individual medley. Kayla Constandse broke her own record in the girls 15-18 age group freestyle with a time of 25.17. Both girls earned first place in all of their events.
Constandse also swam on the record-setting 15-18 mixed medley relay team, along with Jonathan Kuo, Esteban Torres and David Miller. The group finished with a time of 1:57:28.
Four new Northstars qualified for the league championships. William Fei (boys 11-12 age group freestyle), Uma Joshi (girls 9-10 backstroke), Simran Patel (girls 11-12 age group butterfly) and Enoch Zeng (boys 5-6 backstroke) joined the 51 Northstars who had already qualified.
Everett Chen, Sasha Constandse and Andrew Teh earned first place and qualifying times in all of their races.
Eighty-one Northpark Riptide swimmers qualified for the championship meet.
Swimmers placing first on mixed medley relay teams were Derek Hitchens, Sophie Polay, Ryan Park and Ryan Garbalosa with the 7-8 age group Maggie Mcguire, Kendall Flynn, Ethan Freedman and Andrew Duberow with the 9-10 age group, Danielle Williams, Joaquin Le-Pedroza, Konner Lee and Grant Hitchens in the 11-12 age group, Connor Mcguire, William Ludovico, Andrew Miranda and Allison Kamps in the 13-14 age group and Hunter Hitchens, Kevin Chao, Tiffany Chen and Alexander Pai in the 15-18 age group.
Swimmers taking first in the individual medley were Maggie Mcguire (age 9-10), Andrew Nazareth (age 11-12), William Ludovico (age 13-14) and Hunter Hitchens (age 15-18).
Hitchens also broke three records on Saturday. He broke marks in the 50 freestyle with a time of 22.40, 50 butterfly in 25.28 and 100 individual medley in 56.87.
The team’s mixed freestyle relay won four races. Winners included Kylie Park, Dylan Park, Ryan Lezak and Catherine Ertel (age 5-6), Joy Lee, Maddy Malo, Adrienne Tang and Simon Sharestan (age 7-8), Noah Huang, Karina Carley, Noah Lee and Stella Casola (age 9-10), and Matthew Ludovico, Brandon Chen, Nathan Morgan and Maya Wallace (age 13-14).
South Irvine, Village Park wrap up
South Irvine Dolphin swimmers winning all three of their individual events included Halle Ewing in the 7-8 age group butterfly, breaststroke and freestyle, Nathan Wu in the 7-8 age group backstroke, breaststroke and freestyle, Yvonne Laio in the 9-10 age group backstroke, breaststroke and individual medley and Julia Wright in the 15-18 age group individual medley, breaststroke and freestyle.
In the 11-12 year old age group, Jean Meyer won the girls backstroke and freestyle, Hayden Shulman won the boys backstroke and individual medley and Judson Balding was first in the boys 15-18 age group breaststroke and freestyle.
Other winners included Matthew Charles in the boys’11-12 freestyle, Haley Edwards in the girls 13-14 freestyle, Julian Hernandez in the boys 13-14 age group freestyle and Phillip Wright in boys 15-18 age group breaststroke.
The Village Park Piranhas had 13 swimmers finish first in individual events.
They were Bravo Borroto (5-6 age group boys 25-yard freestyle), Danica Canto (9-10 age group girls 50-yard freestyle), Connor Ho (5-6 age group boys 25-yard breaststroke), Makenzie Kaufman (13-14 age group girls 50-yard backstroke and 100-yard individual medley), Amy Koo (13-14 age group girls 50-yard breaststroke), Jonathan Shaw (15-18 age group boys 50-yard backstroke) and Aniyah Shen (9-10 age group girls 50-yard butterfly).
Also, Isabella Snetsinger (11-12 age group girls 100-yard individual medley), Hyeseung Son (13-14 age group girls 50-yard butterfly), Marco Pablo Tirado (5-6 age group boys 25-yard butterfly), Luke Venzlaff (13-14 age group boys 100-yard individual medley and 50-yard breaststroke) and Alex Zive (9-10 age group boys 100-yard individual medley).
Marina Pitt (5-6 girls) finished first and obtained qualifying times in all three events in which she participated (25-yard backstroke, 25-yard breaststroke and 25-yard freestyle).
