In a divided vote, the Irvine City Council, selected Third District Councilman James Mai as Vice Mayor.
Mayor Agran and Councilmembers Mike Carroll, William Go, and James Mai voted in support of Mai while Councilmembers Melinda Liu and Kathleen Treseder voted for Treseder to serve as Vice Mayor for 2025.
Agran nominated Mai while newly-elected Councilmember Melinda Liu nominated Councilmember Kathleen Treseder. Agran said, "I want to work together and to be working with a Vice Mayor who works with me everyday. I'm up to here with partisan politics and was stunned to hear from new Councilmembers that no Democrat should be appointing any Republican." Agran added, "That is absolutely wrong. That is contrary to what non-partisan local government is supposed to be about. This is the one place you're supposed to be able to work with your neighbors to make our community a better place."
"We need a Vice Mayor and we should move our city forward with an appointment to help Mayor Agran," said Councilman William Go who voted for Treseder in December and Mai tonight to avoid another deadlock.
In December, the City Council deliberated over who would serve as Vice Mayor for 2025. Mayor Agran nominated Third District Councilman James Mai while Councilmember Melinda Liu nominated Councilmember Kathleen Treseder, just as they did tonight. After three rounds of tie voting, no Vice Mayor was selected and the decision was deferred to a meeting in January 2025.
