Irvine burger truck, GD Bro, to compete in Food Network’s ‘Great Food Truck Race’
After Orange County’s Lime Truck won the “Great Food Truck Race” in 2011, yet another local food truck is seeking glory on the Food Network show.
GD Bro food truck, the brainchild of friends Kevin Nguyen and Mark Cruz, is competing on the “Great Food Truck Race,” which debuts at 9 p.m. on Aug. 23.
The Irvine-based food truck, founded in 2013, is known for its burgers stuffed with gooey cheese and topped with out-there items like mozzarella sticks, pineapple and kettle-cooked chips. Its crowd favorite is a jalapeño cream cheese-stuffed burger topped with pico de gallo and avocado chipotle mayo.
For the show’s 6th season, the theme is Route 66. The seven competitors start in Santa Monica. Other stops include: Sedona, Az.; Santa Fe, New Mexico, Amarillo, Texas, Tulsa, Oklahoma and St. Louis. The finale is heled in Chicago. The winner gets $50,000.
Due to confidentially agreements, GD Bro is not allowed to talk specifics of the show.
In an interview with the Register, Nguyen said: “We learned a lot about ourselves, what our strengths and weaknesses are.”
Filmed this year, Nguyen said he, Cruz and Geofrey Manila represented Orange County well — with their self-proclaimed “fun, loud and obnoxious, but not in a bad way” attitudes.
Nguyen likened the truck’s behavior on the show to that of friends kicking about care-free on a California beach. He called them “three young guys, very hungry and ambitious, having fun and doing what they love.”
One thing they definitely want to improve: connections with customers. He said that since food trucks rely heavily on social media, sometimes they can be disconnected from the real world. “Sometimes you forget to do it the old-fashioned way,” Nguyen said.
Other competitors: Diso’s Italian Sandwich Society (Brooklyn), Pho Nomenal Dumplings (Raleigh, N.C.), Postcards (Los Angeles), Spice It Up (Phoenix), The Guava Tree Truck (Dallas) and Waffle Love (Provo, Utah).
The Tyler Florence hosted show debuts Aug. 23 at 9 p.m. (local time) on the Food Network channel.
The GD Bro truck will be serving Route 66 themed specials every week during the show’s airing. Nguyen said fans should look for an announcement at the end of the month about the opening of GD Bro’s brick and mortar location in Santa Ana.
