It’s on our money, our national monuments – and now the city of Irvine hopes to put the motto “In God We Trust” on public display.
The City Council was scheduled Tuesday to vote on a proposed permanent display of the motto in “a designated location in the Council Chambers,” according to officials.
On July 7, Mayor Steven Choi issued a memo (PDF) to the City Manager’s Office asking for “direction to staff on how to advance the display of our nation’s motto ‘In God We Trust’.”
Possible displays under consideration include one with the text displayed near the city seal or a graphic with the U.S. flag alongside the motto.
To support his proposal, Choi cited recent data showing over 500 U.S. cities and counties – including 18 cities in Orange County – have approved an “In God We Trust” display in government meeting places.
The phrase was adopted in 1956 as the official U.S. national motto, which Congress reaffirmed as recently as 2011.
